Five Lessons from Helen Keller

Image
Helen Keller (1880-1968) : We are fortunate enough to live in an era in which disability is not stigmatised. Some might argue that disability is considered a badge of honour, or that there is a trend towards recognising – perhaps even creating ‘disability’ – where previously there was none. One of the pioneering advocates for the mindshift towards acceptance of disability was Helen Keller. In a different era, no doubt millions of people were disregarded, undermined incarcerated or even quietly euthanised for the heinous ‘crime’ of being disabled. The ‘one size fits all’ mentality of the nineteenth and earlier twentieth centuries had little tolerance desire or resources to accommodate difference. Often the highest ideal of certain societies was to make everyone feel, think and act the same. And woe betide any transgressors. Helen Keller (1880-1968) was an outstanding example of that other side of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in which individual endeavour, ...

How to be one of The Seven Percent who Do a Successful New Year's Resolution

Image
How can you be one of the seven percent of adults who make and keep a New Year's Resolution for over thirty days? Find out below, but first a bit of history. The Romans had a demi-God (I suppose) called Janus. Janus had one head but with two faces, one point leftward into the past and one pointing right into the future. This is one of the many origins of The New Year as a time for reflection. And why we have 'January'. I'm a sucker for this time of year. I get into the Christmas season by releasing an EP of 'Christmas Songs' and I get all tense and optimistic about 'New Beginnings'.  This year I put out a series of twelve shorts on YouTube about how to prepared for a successful New Year's Resolution, and am feeling a little buzz of optimism . My man Bedros Keulian is opposed to all of this as he sees it as a fabricated jolt of optimism that can only result in failure of off-putting of the Goals. He recommends just 'Start Now'. I sympathise w...

Would you like to take part in an experiment in 2024? I want to see how my Blog's name is operating as either an attractant or a repellent to new traffic. Set up as a Personal Development project, perhaps the title is misleading. What's the Point of Christimas - I mean Really!?!

Image
Christmas has a long and convoluted history. To be honest, it is a mixture of paganism and Christianity really. The Romans has Saturnalia on December 25th, The Norse people had Odin on a sleigh, Saint Nicholas was born in Turkey, there's not evidence that it was snowing when Baby Jesus was born, nor, when precisely he was. The Three 'Wise Men' were astrologers I don't think it mentions a stable in the bible, and so on. https://people.com/parents/celebrity-kids-meeting-santa-photos-2019/ We place great store on 'peace on Earth and mercy mild' but overlook  the slaughter of the the infants.  We also neglect to remember how much warmongering we are capable of on the other 351 days of the  year. How we can relish the pain and misery that some 'deserving' people suffer, at the same time as we become outraged that other people experience pain and misery even through they are 'blameless'. Clearly the message of Christianity does not appear to feature h...
